DAF’s new generation sets a new industry standard for efficiency, safety and driver comfort,” the jury said after a series of extensive tests. The hydrogen-powered version of the new DAF won the award for “Innovative Truck of the Year 2022.”

Based on the rules of the international Truck of the Year (IToY) competition, this annual award is given to the truck introduced in the last year that has made the most significant contribution to improving the efficiency of road transport. A number of criteria are considered in the judging, including technological innovation, comfort, safety, driving pleasure, fuel economy, environmental impact and total cost of ownership (TCO).

Industry first

“DAF is the first truck manufacturer to introduce a completely new generation of trucks designed to meet the new European regulations on truck weights and dimensions,” said Gianenrico Griffini, chairman of the International Truck of the Year jury. “The result is a range of very attractive and aerodynamic trucks that offer the best efficiency, safety and driver comfort in their class.” The new XF, XG and XG⁺ offer excellent forward visibility through a large curved windshield, low beltline side windows and a curb visibility window. These features – along with a digital vision system that replaces traditional side mirrors and a new turn camera – provide all-around visibility, protecting vulnerable road users.”

True teamwork

The prestigious International Truck of the Year 2022 award was presented to Harry Wolters, president of DAF Trucks, who dedicated the recognition to all of DAF’s more than 12,000 employees worldwide. “This is a unique achievement – a true team effort! The new generation of XF, XG and XG⁺ represents the biggest innovation project in our more than 90-year history. It is the result of listening carefully to our customers and their drivers, having a clear vision of the future of sustainable and viable transport solutions, and always doing our utmost to deliver the best transport solutions. We are the first truck manufacturer to take full advantage of the new European regulations for truck weights and dimensions to provide unique benefits to our customers.

The chairman of the IToY jury, Gianenrico Griffini, summed up the jury’s vote: “With the launch of a new generation of trucks, DAF has introduced a range of high-tech heavy-duty vehicles that set new standards in the industry. It is also forward-looking, providing a comprehensive and highly energy-efficient platform for new generations of alternative energy and powertrains.”

Truck 2022 Innovation Award

As a result, the innovative DAF XF H₂ truck was awarded the 2022 Truck Innovation Award.

“This special award underscores our philosophy that we need to explore the full range of technologies over the next decade as we move toward the decarbonization of transportation and mobility,” commented Ron Borsboom, executive director of product development at DAF. “Hydrogen technology could be a very interesting option in the future, alongside the battery electric solutions we already offer today and the hybrid trucks under development.” Winning the 2022 Truck Innovation Award also shows that the internal combustion engine (ICE) still has a promising future, with new generations of carbon-neutral fuels on the horizon. It is important to understand that ending the use of fossil fuels should not automatically lead to a ban on internal combustion engines, especially in the heavy transport segment.”
added Ron Borsboom, “H2-ICE means that the existing network of refueling stations can be used in many regions. And let’s give more weight to the fact that we in Europe have extensive knowledge and production capacity in this technology.”
The jury for the International Truck of the Year competition is made up of 24 experienced editors and journalists from the most important international truck and transportation publications.
