Roads with biggest traffic volume in 2010 were minor roads with approx. 36 per cent of traffic. Rural ‘A’ roads with almost 30 per cent of traffic came second followed by motorways with almost 20 per cent of traffic. Only 16.1 per cent of traffic in year 2010 was on urban ‘A’ roads. Traffic volumes on motorways were at around the same level in the second quarter of 2011 as in the second quarter of 2010, while rural and urban A roads were 2 and 1 per cent lower respectively.
Light van traffic was 1 per cent higher in the second quarter of 2011 than in the second quarter of 2010. Traffic by this mode grew by nearly 65 per cent between 1993 and 2007 before slight reductions in traffic levels in 2008 and 2009, followed by a return to growth in 2010. Heavy goods vehicles accounted for 5.3 per cent of all motor vehicle traffic in 2010.
